***SCREENING THE INFAMOUS Cherry Bomb**
(Ernesto M. Foronda, 29 min., 1998)

The band that started grrrl style revolution gets the rockumentary
treatment in Ernesto M. Foronda's "Cherry Bomb." Witness the band's
quick rise to fame and long-lasting impact on the feminist cultural
landscape; hear the sordid details of the band's inevitable flameout.
With appearances by Kathleen Hanna, The Need, The Butchies, Harum
Scarum, Third Sex, Tammy Rae Carland, among others. Best of all, see
the fans testify!

This is a rare New York screening of this controversial film, often
cited as a precursor to VH1's "Behind the Music" TV specials. Don't
miss it!

****Proceeds will support the production and operating costs of
riffRAG's second issue and opening event in the Fall 2006****

riffRAG events and shows to check out

Please see Em Sixteen's post below for information about our upcoming benefit at Snapshot May 16th and the group show Urban Logbooks at Local Project, opening May 13th. We look forward to seeing you all there!!

While you are feeling arty, there are two great shows in Williamsburg worth checking out. The first is called "tea with Gods" and it is Brookly-based artist Yunmee Kyong's first solo exhibition in New York. It is at AG Gallery, located on North 3rd between Berry and Whythe ave's. The show features paintings, prints, artist books, small boxes filled with interesting things and, most fun, a large papier mache sculpture in the middle of the room of Buddha and Ganesh having tea and cakes. One of the fun parts of the show, besides the lovely work itself, is that on Sunday afternoon the 14th and 21st audiences are invited to join the Gods for a tea party from 1-4. Some friends and I were able to catch the tail end of one of the tea parties and were treated to lovely jasmine tea and homemade carrot cake made by Yunmee herself! This show is not only notable for the imaginary worlds of different Gods interacting and coexisting playfully and peacefully (something we could hope for in a time of increasing religious and cultural polarization) but also because of the innovative way it promotes dialogue between artists, art and viewer. Who knows what conversations could result!

While you are looking at art in Williamsburg, stop by Southfirst gallery at 60 North 6th street to see the group show Mystic River curated by Noah Sheldon. The exhibition is based around a photograph by Stephen Shore entilted Merced River, which shows a group of people camped out in Yosemite National Park. The show, which includes paintings, drawings, sculptural installations, quilted fabrics and sound pieces, evokes the feeling of this photograph. Looking at the often delicate and dare I say almost minimalist, works I felt pangs of nostalgia, the desire for reflection and the feeling summer in the wilderness evokes- of having space and time to think and breathe, a refreshing change from the pace of the city in springtime.
