The Government of Japan are interested in investing in the development of the six regions of Indonesia as the economic corridor and has conducted a study to map the infrastructure needs to work on the economic potential in the region.

Minister of Trade Mari Elka Pangestu expressed six economic corridor is located in East Sumatra and West Java Sea, North Java, Kalimantan, West Sulawesi, East Java and Bali and Nusa Tenggara, Papua.

“They’re interested in investing outside the now there is [such as automotive, electronics, textiles]. Investment course there is no commitment in terms of numbers. The government has not given the investment commitment,” said Mari at Istana Negara today.

Japanese government’s interest, it is clear Mari, preceded by studies that have been completed by the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia based in Indonesia. Research which is Japanese aid is specifically made a study of economic potential of the corridor from which Indonesia is interested in the six areas will be worked out.

Japan, he said, had done the same thing is to develop Mumbai corridor which is initiated between the Government of India and Japan. Japan signed a U.S. $ 150 million in Mumbai, and the rest in private.

“So such a model [Mumbai Corridor] is expected to be developed in various regions [six economic corridors in Indonesia],” said Mari.

He added that the development of economic corridors would be in line with the development of special economic zone that will terkoordiasi between central and local governments as well as between relevant agencies.
