Untitled
My work reflects a preoccupation with dualism;
specifically in relation to coupled figures. The figures I depict
are represented as stagnant or in a state of confusion and submission,
like vulnerable dolls. I am interested in reconfiguring corporeality
beyond the logic of the subject-object divide and
in investigating stereotypical depictions of the individual and
its alienation within a complex society. I continue to develop
this current project. A recent trip to Brazil inspired a new series
of work which consists of figures in action while
appearing as saints. This work stems from my exposure to various
religious practices in Brazil, specifically
those of Candomblé, an Afro Brazilian religion initiated
for the slaves of diverse ethnic groups, and Macumba, a popular
dance and music of Brazil that derives from the practices of Macumba
religious cults.
