riffRAG Issue 1 (Summer 2005)
opens in a new window
Fed up with lack of access to
resources for emerging and politically motivated artists, New York
City-based editors Felix Gatopardo, Em Sixteen, and L.N.R. released
the first issue
of riffRAG in July of 2005. From whimsical works on paper by mixed-media
artist Muffie White to an interview with James Spooner, the creator
of the 2003 documentary
film Afropunk, the riffRAG website places a wide array of artists
in conversation with one another. riffRAG expands commonly held notions
of “political art” and joins innovative aesthetic practice
and cultural criticism, a pairing rarely seen in artistic publications.
riffRAG furthers the concept of creating unique art objects by publishing
a limited edition hand-bound artists’ book featuring six original
prints and a silk-screened cover.
